Aktive pharmazeutische Wirkstoffe (APIs)
APIs sind die Rohstoffe eines Arzneimittels, die die arzneiliche Wirkung eines Medikaments bedingen. Entsprechend der chemischen Klassifizierung können APIs in folgende Stoffgruppen untergliedert werden: Naturstoffe, anorganisch synthetisch hergestellte Arzneistoffe und organisch synthetisch hergestellte Arzneistoffe. Anorganische synthetisch hergestellte Arzneistoffe basieren auf anorganischen Stoffen, z.B. Aluminiumhydroxid und Magnesiumtrisilikat, die für die Behandlung von Magen- und Zwölffingerdarmgeschwüren eingesetzt werden. Organisch hergestellte Arzneistoffe sind Medikamente, die aus organischen Rohstoffen hergestellt werden, z.B. Aspirin, Chloramphenicol, Koffein, usw. Naturstoffe können gemäß ihrer Quelle in zwei Subkategorien unterteilt werden: biochemische Medikamente und pflanzlich chemische Medikamente. Antibiotika gehören zu biochemischen Medikamenten, weil diese durch mikrobielle Fermentation gewonnen werden. Die seit den letzten Jahren vorkommenden halbsynthetischen Antibiotika sind Produkte aus der Herstellung über Biosynthese und chemischer Synthese. Im Vergleich zu anderen APIs haben organisch synthetisch hergestellte Arzneimittel das breiteste Sortiment, den größten Produktionsanteil und den größten Produktionswert. Organisch synthetisch hergestellte Arzneimittel gehören zum bedeutendsten Zweig der chemischen und pharmazeutischen Industrie. Die Qualität der APIs entspricht der Qualität der Medikamente. Deswegen gibt es strenge Regeln bezüglich der Qualität der APIs.
