Butoxyl is a colorless liquid with a sharp odor.Molecular weight=146.19; Specific gravity (H2O:1)=0.96; Boiling point=169-173℃; Melting/Freezingpoint =,- 80℃; Flash point=62℃ (cc); 77℃.Hazard Identification (based on NFPA-704 M RatingSystem): Health 1, Flammability 2, Reactivity 1. Slightlysoluble in water; solubility=30 g/L.
A liquid with an acrid odor. Flash point near 140°F. Slightly less dense than water. Vapors much heavier than air. May irritate skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
Flammable. Slightly soluble in water.
When heated to decomposition, emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes [USCG, 1999].
Causes eye and skin irritation. Mildly toxic by ingestion.
Special Hazards of Combustion Products: When heated to decomposition, emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
Mildly toxic by
ingestion. A skin and eye irritant. A
flammable liquid. Flammable when exposed
to heat or flame; can react with oxidizing
materials. To fight fire, use alcohol foam, COa, dry chemical. When heated to
decomposition it emits acrid smoke and
irritating fumes.
Those involved in the use of this material as a cleaning solvent and as a component in varnishesand casting molds.
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seekmedical attention immediately. If this chemical contactsthe skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical has been inhaled, remove fromexposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing hasstopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transferpromptly to a medical facility. When this chemical hasbeen swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.
Color Code—Red: Flammability Hazard: Storein a flammable liquid storage area or approved cabinetaway from ignition sources and corrosive and reactivematerials. Butoxyl must be stored to avoid contact withoxidizers (such as perchlorates, peroxides, permanganates, chlorates, and nitrates), since violent reactions occur.Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, wellventilated area. Sources of ignition, such as smoking andopen flames, are prohibited where Butoxyl is used, handled,or stored in a manner that could create a potentialfire or explosion hazard.
Butoxyl requires a shipping label of“FLAMMABLE LIQUID.” The Hazard Class is 3 and thePacking Group is III.
