Safety Information
2-Fluoroethanol Usage And Synthesis
  • Chemical PropertiesEthylene fluorohydrin is a colorless liquid
  • General DescriptionA liquid. Used as a rodenticide, insecticide and acaricide. Not registered as a pesticide in the U.S.
  • Reactivity Profile2-Fluoroethanol generates very toxic fumes of fluoride that will be emitted in a fire. [EPA, 1998].
  • Health HazardToxicity rating is the same as for fluoroacetate, super toxic. The probable oral lethal dose in humans is a taste (less than 7 drops) for a 70 kg (150 lb.) person. The chemical is highly toxic when inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Toxicity depends on its oxidation to fluoroacetate by tissue alcohol dehydrogenase.
  • Fire HazardVery toxic fumes of fluoride may be emitted in a fire.
  • Safety ProfilePoison by inhalation, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, and intravenous routes. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of F-.
  • Potential ExposureEthylene fluorohydrin is used as a rodenticide, insecticide, and acaricide. It is not registered as a pesticide in the U.S.
  • ShippingUN3383 Poisonous Toxic by inhalation liquid, flammable, n.o.s. with an LC50 ≤ 200 ml/m3 and saturated vapor concentration ≤ 500 LC50, Hazard class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials, 3-Flammable liquid, Technical Name Required, Inhalation Hazard Zone A
  • IncompatibilitiesEthylene fluorohydrin vapor may form explosive mixture with air. Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, and epoxides.
  • Waste DisposalIn accordance with 40CFR 165 recommendations for the disposal of pesticides and pesticide containers. Must be disposed properly by following package label directions or by contacting your local or federal environmental control agency, or by contacting your regional EPA office
