5-Undecanone is a useful research chemical used in the preparation of carboxaldehydes, ketones, and esters via iodine-mediated oxidation of alcohols.
5-UNDECANONE rarely offered commercially,
has been suggested for use in perfume compositions. However, after so much discussion
about the possible hazards of using certain
ketones (including the named isomer) in perfumes for cosmetic preparations, chances are
that this ketone has little or no future in perfumery.
5-UNDECANONE can be produced from Valenc and Heptanoic acids
by heating of the mixture over Thorium oxide
to about 450°C.
