Synthesis
To a solution of 3-aminobut-2-enenenitrile (16.5 g, 0.2 mol) in n-pentanol (40 mL) was slowly added methylhydrazine (12.9 g, 0.28 mol). The reaction mixture was heated to reflux and kept for 3 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, n-pentanol and excess methylhydrazine were removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting beige precipitate was dissolved in heptane (150 mL) and filtered through a sintered funnel. The filtrate was dried under vacuum at 40 °C to afford 5-amino-1,3-dimethylpyrazole as a beige solid (13.5 g, 60.4% yield).
