2-Bromo-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine

Preparation of 2-hydrazino-6-trifluoromethylpyridine: 14.5 g of 40% hydrazine hydrate and 10 ml of isopropanol were added to a 100 ml single-necked flask. 7 g of 2-chloro-6-trifluoromethylpyridine was slowly added dropwise to the mixture at room temperature. After the addition was complete, the mixture was heated to reflux and stirred for 1 h. After cooling, the reaction solution was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phases were combined, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated to obtain 6.5 g of a white solid. Preparation of 2-bromo-6-trifluoromethylpyridine: 5 g of 2-hydrazino-6-trifluoromethylpyridine and 50 ml of chloroform were added to a 100 ml three-necked flask. 2.89 ml of bromine was added dropwise at room temperature. After the addition was complete, the mixture was heated to reflux and stirred for 1 h. After cooling, the reaction solution was poured into water, 10 ml of saturated sodium thiosulfate solution was added, the pH was adjusted to 8 with saturated sodium carbonate solution, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phases were combined, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated to give 5.57 g of a white solid.
