Olibanum gum is yellowish to yellow-green transparent beaded solid. Soluble in ethanol, chloroform and ether; insoluble in turpentine; insoluble in water. Used in the system of varnish, chewing gum flavor, medicine, etc.
The oil, obtained by steam distillation of the trees B. carterii Birdw. and other Boswellia species, has a balsamic,
slightly citrine odor.
It is a pale-yellow liquid. It is soluble in most fixed oils and with a slight haze in mineral oil. It
is insoluble in propylene glycol and glycerin.
Extracts and their physically modified derivatives. It is a product which may contain resin acids and their esters, terpenes, and oxidation or polymerization products of these terpenes.
A skin irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes
