It is widely used in heat-resistant lubricants, flame retardants, medical devices, and cosmetics. Polydimethylsiloxane is hydrophobic, cytocompatible and viscoelastic and can be used for water-repellent coatings in the textile industry.

PDMS is a common surfactant, component of defoamers and as an herbicidal penetran.
