Sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate is used as an analytical reagent for alkaloids, an important intermediate for anthraquinone dyes, and a major raw material for the synthesis of anthraquinone acid dyes. It can be used to synthesize reactive, vat, and disperse dyes, and is also used in dye synthesis, organic synthesis, and other industries.

Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid ,
Na salt, also called silver salt, Mr 288.3, is prepared
by sulfonation in the absence of mercury
(e.g., according to the procedure cited in). The acid also can be obtained from the
1,6- (or 1,7-) disulfonic acid by desulfonation at
the α position in dilute sulfuric acid .
