In 1993 Suzuki and co-workers reported the nitration of pyridine with nitrogen dioxide and ozone in dichloromethane at room temperature. They obtained a 3.5 % yield of 3-nitropyridine and 1.2 % of 3,5-dinitropyridine.
3-Nitropyridines can also be synthesized by oxidation of 3-aminopyridine with hydrogen peroxide in fuming sulphuric acid in 45% yield. Nitration of 2,6-dichloropyridine with nitronium tetrafluoroborate gave a 11% yield of 3-nitropyridine after dehalogenation. 3-nitropyridine has also been prepared from 2- chloro-3-nitropyridine.
