Bis(2-methoxyethyl) Phthalate is a phthalate derivative found in cosmetic products.
It finds it application in cosmetic industry. It is also used as a plasticizer for toys, including inflatable water products, hoppers, play and exercise balls.
DMEP is formed by the esterification of ethylene glycol
monomethyl ether with phthalic anhydride in the presence of
a catalyst (sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid) or noncatalytically
at high temperature.
Dimethoxyethyl phthalate
(DMEP) causes teratogenic, reproductive, and
fetotoxic effects in animals.
Phthalate is the salt or derivative of phthalic acid.
Potassium hydrogen phthalate is the primary standard for
preparing a standard sodium hydroxide solution. Dioctyl
phthalate, an ester of phthalic acid and octyl alcohol is
used as aplasticim inplastics
Moderately toxic by
ingestion and intraperitoneal routes. Mddly
toxic by inhalation. Experimental
teratogenic and reproductive effects. A skin
and eye irritant. Mutation data reported. A
pesticide. Combustible when exposed to
heat or flame; can react with oxidizing
materials. To fight fre, use water, foam,
CO2, dry chemical. When heated to
decomposition it emits acrid smoke and
irritating fumes.
