ichthammol is an anti-microbial. It is a dark sulfonated shale oil obtained via the sulfation and ammoniation of a mineral deposit distillate (shale oil). Its various constituents include saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, nitrogen bases, acids, and thiophene derivatives.

General Description
Pale yellow or brownish-black to dark brown very viscous liquid. Strong tarry odor and a burning taste.

Reactivity Profile
AMMONIUM ICHTHOSULFONATE is incompatible with acids, alkaloids, carbonates, hydroxides and mercuric chloride. AMMONIUM ICHTHOSULFONATE is also incompatible with iodides and salts of iron and lead.
Fire Hazard
AMMONIUM ICHTHOSULFONATE is probably combustible.
