Aussehen Eigenschaften
CdCl2. Farblose, fast geruchlose Kristalle. Sublimierbar. Hygroskopische Blättchen, die unter Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme an der Luft zu einem weißen Pulver zerfallen.
Gefahren für Mensch und Umwelt
Bortrifluorid greift Cadmiumchlorid heftig an; mit Alkalimetallen erfolgt Explosion.
Cadmiumchlorid kann sowohl bei akuter als auch bei chronischer Einwirkung schwere gesundheitliche Schäden verursachen. Nach Verschlucken bereits geringer Mengen folgen Erbrechen und schwere Störungen im Magen- und Darmbereich, verbunden mit Leibschmerzen und Krämpfen; lebensbedrohende Nieren- und Leberschäden sind möglich. Die Wirkung beruht auf der Hemmung SH-haltiger Enzyme und einer Entkopplung der oxidativen Phosphorylierung. Die Inhalation von Stäuben führt zu schweren Reizerscheinungen in den Luftwegen. Die chronische Aufnahme durch Verschlucken oder Einatmen von Staub zeigt sich in einer zunehmenden Gelbfärbung der Zahnhälse, besonders an den Schneide- und Eckzähnen, an Reizungen der oberen Atemwege, Gewichtsabnahme, Störungen am Knochengerüst sowie Leber und Nierenschäden.
Im Tierversuch hat sich Cadmiumchlorid eindeutig als krebserregend erwiesen.
Schutzmaßnahmen und Verhaltensregeln
Staubentwicklung vermeiden; Stäube nicht einatmen. Im Abzug arbeiten.
Verhalten im Gefahrfall
Verschüttete Substanz vorsichtig trocken aufnehmen. Betroffene Flächen nachreinigen. Lösungen mit Chemikalienbinder (z.B. Rench-Rapid) aufnehmen und als Sondermüll entsorgen.
Auf Umgebung abstimmen.

Nach Hautkontakt: Mit viel Wasser und Seife abwaschen.

Cadmium chloride is a colourless and odourless crystal. It is used for the preparation of cadmium sulphide, used as ‘cadmium yellow’, a brilliant-yellow pigment, which is stable to heat and sulphide fumes. Cadmium chloride has a high solubility in water and is a non-combustible solid, but the dust can be a moderate fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame or when reacted with oxidising agents. It is incompatible with bromine trifluoride, potassium oxidisers, zinc, selenium, tellurium, and hydrogen azide.

Cadmium chloride may be prepared by heating the metal with chlorine or hydrogen chloride gas. In the solution, it is formed by treating the metal or its salts, such as oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, or sulfide with hydrochloric acid:

The solution is evaporated and crystallized to yield a hydrated salt. The hydrated salt yields anhydrous cadmium chloride upon heating under hydrogen chloride or when refluxed with thionyl chloride.
Cadmium chloride also may be prepared by adding dry cadmium acetate to acetyl chloride in glacial acetic acid.

Commercial cadmium chloride is amixture of hydrates that approximates to dihydrates. The commercial grade available in the United States typically contains about 51% of cadmium. Liquid caddy contains 20.1% cadmium chloride.

Erste Hilfe
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seekmedical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure,begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.Medical observation is recommended for 24-48 h afterbreathing overexposure, as pulmonary edema may bedelayed.
