Black powder. Insoluble in water and ethanol. Dissolves in sodium sulfide solution to a dark green color; in hydrochloric acid to a greenish black precipitate; in sodium hydroxide solution to a blue color. Dissolves slightly in concentrated sulfuric acid when cold, but darkens to a greenish blue precipitate upon heating. Continued heating turns the precipitate dark blue, and dilution yields a greenish blue precipitate. The dyed material exhibits a yellowish olive color in an alkaline sodium hydrosulfite solution, which returns to its original color upon oxidation. It completely fades in sodium hypochlorite solution.
