How does adenosine affect Adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (CAMP)?
Nov 6,2025
The effect of adenosine on adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) is bidirectional, depending on the type of adenosine receptor it binds to. When adenosine binds to A₁ or A₃ receptors, it inhibits cAMP production, leading to decreased cAMP levels; conversely, when it binds to A₂A or A₂B receptors, it stimulates cAMP production, leading to increased cAMP levels. Therefore, adenosine can both increase and decrease intracellular cAMP levels, thereby precisely regulating a variety of physiological functions.
