2,7-Dimethoxynaphthalene was dissolved in an organic solvent and reacted in the presence of anhydrous ethanol and sodium metal at -20C to 5C to produce intermediate (I). The intermediate (I) was dissolved in an organic ketone solvent (e.g. acetone or cyclohexanone) and then reacted under the condition that the pH of the reaction system was adjusted to 1-3 by dilute hydrochloric acid to obtain 7-methoxy-2-naphthalenemannone.
