Cefotaxime hydrochloride is an oral third-generation broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic with strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and is stable against bacterial beta-lactamases. Clinically, it is suitable for lower respiratory tract infections, ear, nose, throat infections, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Cefetamet pivoxil hydrochloride, an ester prodrug of cefetamet, is an orally active
cephalosporin introduced for the treatment of community-acquired respiratory and
urinary tract infections. Roche indicated that this drug will possibly be the first
third-generation cephalosporin to be launched in some counrries. It is reportedly useful in penicillin-resistant pneumococci, gonococci and H. influenzae infections, but
ineffective against Staphylococci, P. aeruginosa and some non-fermenters.
