Molecular sieves, 5A, 3-4mm (0.12-0.16in) dia. Pellets is used as an sorbent.
Molecular sieves, 5Å is an anticaking and conditioning agent used to improve flow properties and prevent caking. It absorbs moisture up to 75% of its weight. It functions as a moisture absorbent, moisture barrier, carrier, and processing aid. It is used in salt, cake mixes, powdered sugar, nondairy creamers, and dry mixes. Usage level ranges from 1 to 2%. It is also termed sodium aluminosilicate.
Molecular sieves are crystalline metal aluminosilicates having a three-dimensional interconnecting network of silica and alumina tetrahedra. Natural water of hydration is removed from this network by heating to produce uniform cavities which selectively adsorb molecules of a specific size. The 5A form has divalent calcium ions in place of sodium cations give apertures of ~5?, which exclude molecules of effective diameter >5? (for example: all 4-carbon rings and iso-compounds). These molecular sieves can adsorb compounds such as n-butane, n-butyl alcohol, propane, docosane and dichlorodifluoro-methane.
