Petroleum resins are mainly used as binders in the rubber industry, and can also be used in coatings, printing inks, hot melt adhesives, and hot melt and solvent-based pressure-sensitive adhesives. In paints, high-softening-point C9 petroleum resins, DCPD resins, and C5/C9 copolymer resins are mainly used to increase gloss, improve film adhesion, hardness, and acid and alkali resistance. In rubber, they have good miscibility with natural rubber particles, have little impact on the vulcanization process, and act as tackifiers, reinforcing agents, and softeners. C5/C9 copolymer resins can also improve the adhesion between rubber particles and tire cords, making them suitable for high-requirement products such as radial tires. Adding them to adhesives and pressure-sensitive tapes can improve adhesion, acid and alkali resistance, and water resistance while reducing costs. In inks, high-softening-point C9 petroleum resins and DCPD resins are mainly used for color development, fast drying, brightening, and improved printing performance. In road marking and line marking paints, they have good adhesion to concrete or asphalt pavements, are wear-resistant and water-resistant, easy to apply, have good weather resistance, dry quickly, and have high strength. It can also be used in paper sizing agents, plastic modifiers, etc.
Petroleum resins is a complex combination of organic compounds, predominantly hydrocarbons, obtained as a fraction of the extract from solvent extraction of residuum. It consists predominantly of high molecular weight compounds with high carbon-to-hydrogen ratios.
