Barium metaborate is used both as a flame retarder and as an antifungicide for many flexible poly(vinyl chloride) applications.
Barium diborate is a biocide registered
in USA since 1960 as a broad-spectrum bactericide and
fungicide. It is added to paints, coatings, adhesives, plastics,
and paper and paper products.
Barium metaborate
can be prepared by reactionof an aqueous solutionof boric
acid with Ba(OH)2. The prepared g-BBO contains water of
crystallization that cannot be completely removed by
drying at 120 °C. Dehydrated g-BBO can be prepared
by heating to 300–400 °C.
