Copper(I) thiophene-2-carboxylate

100 g of thiophenic acid (780 mmol), 28 g of Cu2O (196 mmol), and 300 mL of toluene were added to a 500 mL three-necked round-bottom flask. The flask was fitted with a Dean-Stark condenser. The mixture was then refluxed for 3 days to remove water via azeotropic extraction. The yellowish-brown suspension was then cooled to ~60°C, and the product was collected in a glass sintered funnel (D-frit). The filter cake was washed with 300 mL of methanol under a nitrogen stream, followed by washing with Et2O until the filtrate was colorless, and then washed with 75 mL of hexane.

The product was dried under a nitrogen stream, then transferred to a flask and dried under vacuum to obtain COPPER(I) THIOPHENE-2-CARBOXYLATE (I) (70 g, 94%) as a light brown powder.
