Decyl propionate is a colorless oily liquid. Very slightly soluble in
water, soluble in alcohol and oils.
Sp.Gr. 0.88. B.P. 265℃. Decyl propionate has a slightly fatty, aldehyde-like odor reminiscent of cognac.
Finds some use in perfume compositions,
partly as a topnote ingredient to support
fresh-citrusy or Ambrette-seed-like notes, partly as a modifier in Citrus fragrance and fruity
notes. Used in flavor compositions for imitation
Citrus fruit, other fruit and Brandy flavors. Concentration in the finished product is
normally mere traces.
By direct esterification in the presence of benzene.
