The one-step synthesis of 1-ethylpyridin-1-ium bromide ([EPy]Br) proceeded as follows: 4.2 mol of ethyl bromide and 4.0 mol of pyridine were added to a 1000 mL round-bottom flask. The reaction mixture was placed in a combined ultrasound-microwave reactor, and the loss of volatile bromoethane was controlled by a cooling water condensation system. The ultrasonic power was set at 1000 W, the microwave heating power was set at 800 W, the reaction temperature was maintained at 50 °C, and the reaction time was 60 min. Upon completion of the reaction, the yield of 1-ethylpyridin-1-ium bromide was calculated to be 89%.
