The crystals of SrAl2O4 are monoclinic, with unit-cell
parameters: a = 5.1497 ? , b = 8.836 ? , c = 8.442 ? ,
β = 93.43°; space group P21 or P21/m.
The SrO·Al2O3 system is of interest in industry
because of the use of the intermediate compounds for
hydraulic cements, laser matrices, and long-duration
photoluminescence or thermoluminescence pigments.
Strontium aluminate acts as a photo luminescent phosphor with long persistence of phosphorescence.
Strontium aluminate can be prepared by reaction of
the oxides at about 700–900°C:
SrO + Al2O3 + heat→SrAl2O4
