Bismuth (III) Bromide

Bismuth(III) Bromide (BiBr₃), also known as bismuth tribromide, is a light yellow-gray crystalline or powdered solid that plays a significant role in various industrial and research applications. 

In materials science, BiBr3 is utilized in the development of semiconductors and optoelectronic devices. Additionally, Bismuth (III) Bromide has been explored in the preparation of nanomaterials and thin films, contributing to research in the fields of photovoltaics and photonics.

It catalyzes the formation of cyclic carbonates.

Bismuth powder is placed in a retort, Br2 is poured over it, and the mixture is allowed to stand for a few days and then distilled. It is also possible to heat Br2 with Bi in a round-bottom flask equipped with a reflux condenser. Purification is by vacuum distillation.

Bismuth(III) bromide can be prepared by reacting bismuth(III) oxide with hydrobromic acid. It can also be synthesized by reacting powdered bismuth with bromine.
