Description
Ethyl cyanoacrylate is contained in instant glues for
metal, glass, rubber, plastics, textiles, tissues and nails.
It polymerizes almost instantaneously in air at room
temperature and bonds immediately and strongly to
surface keratin. Beauticians are exposed to contact
dermatitis from nail glues.
Chemical Properties
Clear Colourless Liquid
Uses
ECA can be used as a tissue adhesive for potential applications in cardiovascular and pulmonary surgeries. It can also be mixed with hydrophobic silica nanoparticles for the designing of cotton fabrics for medical applications.
Uses
Ethyl cyanoacrylate is an acrylate compound used in instant glues to mend broken nails and to adhere glue-impregnated silk or linen to the nail plate,
which is then filed to shape the nail; in medicine to glue tissues and skin cracks; to attach hair and to glue shoes, plastics, and many other materials.
Uses
A cosmetic composition
General Description
Ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (ECA) is a monomeric adhesive that can be used on a variety of materials such as metals, plastics, rubber, ceramics, and wood. It forms a one part adhesive system that can also be used as a primer.
Hazard
An inhalation hazard.
Flammability and Explosibility
Not classified
Safety Profile
An inhalation hazard.
When heated to decomposition it emits
toxic vapors of NOx.
Synthesis
Preparation method of ethyl -cyanoacrylate monomer:
300g of ethyl cyanoacetate and solid formaldehyde or formaldehyde solution were mixed homogeneously under dichloroethane or toluene medium, hexahydropyridine catalyst was added, and the temperature was controlled to be 70C5C, and condensation reaction was carried out for 2h to obtain the oligomer of ethyl -cyanoacrylate;
wherein the ethyl cyanoacetate and formaldehyde aqueous solution (in terms of formaldehyde) were fed in an amount of 1.02:1.00, and the amount of hexahydropyridine added was 0.15% by weight percentage of ethyl cyanoacrylate.
To the oligomer of said ethyl -cyanoacrylate, 50g of dioctyl phthalate was added, the solvent was stripped off to the kettle temperature of 140 at normal or reduced pressure, 8g of phosphorus pentoxide and 4g of hydroquinone were added, and decompression cracking was carried out under the condition of -0.098Mpa, and the fractions at 150-200 were collected, obtaining the crude monomer of ethyl -cyanoacrylate of 290g;
The crude monomer of -cyanoacrylic acid ethyl ester obtained in was distilled under reduced pressure at -0.099Mpa to obtain 267g of the monomer product of -cyanoacrylic acid ethyl ester, and the content of gas phase detection was 99%.
Toxics Screening Level
The ITSL will be based on 1/100 of the TLV, and set at 10 μg/m3 with an 8-hour
averaging time, under R232(1)(c).
