Synthesis
General procedure for the synthesis of 2-hydrazino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidines using 2-chloro-4,6-dimethylpyrimidines as starting material: hydrazine monohydrate (1.02 mL, 21.0 mmol) was slowly added to a solution of ethanol (5 mL) containing 2-chloro-4,6-dimethylpyrimidines (2 g, 14.0 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred continuously for 2 hours at room temperature. Upon completion of the reaction, the precipitate precipitated was collected by vacuum filtration and washed with cold methanol. The resulting solid was dried under a stream of air to give 2-hydrazino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine (1 g, 52% yield) as a white solid. The product was confirmed by mass spectrometry (ESI+) with a m/z of 139 (MH+).
