Preparation
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is obtained by fluorinating ammonium fluoride and phosphorus pentachloride in hydrofluoric acid, or by mixing phosphorus pentachloride with dry ammonium fluoride, heating and cooling, dissolving in water, adding "nitroglycerin" reagent to form a precipitate, washing several times with cold water, then shaking with chloroform and ammonia water, removing "nitroglycerin" by extraction, and evaporating in a water bath.
Description
Ammonium hexafluorophophate can be used to for the synthesis of non-aqueous polymer gel electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide (PEO), which show high conductivity above 10-2 S/cm at 25°C.1 It can be used to prepare other hexafluorophosphate.2 It is also used for the synthesis of ruthenium and palladium complexes.3

Uses
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is used as a preservative. It is used as a starting material in the preparation of other hexafluorophosphates. Further, it is used in synthesis of organometalic compounds, especially rhodicinium hexafluorophosphate, which has inert and non-coordinating counter ion.

General Description
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate decomposes on heating before melting. Solubility of ammonium hexafluorophosphate in H
2O at 20
oC is 74.8% w/v. Additionally, it is very soluble in Me
2CO, MeOH, EtOH and MeOAc, and is decomposed by boiling mineral acids.
Purification Methods
It crystallises from H2O in square plates and decomposes on heating before melting. Its solublility in H2O at 20o is 74.8% w/v, and it is very soluble in Me2CO, MeOH, EtOH and MeOAc but is decomposed by boiling mineral acids.
