7-Tridecanone is a white solid, Leafy crystals or colorless crystalline mass. Sp.Gr. (liquid) 0.82. B.P. 264° C.
M.P. 33° C. Insoluble in water and Ropylene glycol,
soluble in alcohol and oils.
Peculiar, wartn-herbaceous-floral odor with
a woody undertone. The odor has sometimes been compared to that of the “Strawberrytree” (Mediterranean Arbutus), at other times
it seems that the observer has great difficulties
in describing the odor in common terms.
Uses
Finds but a little use in perfume compositions. It acts as a fixative - modifier with
Coumarin, Benzophenone, Acetanisole etc.
in New Mown Hay, Fougere, and other
fragrance types.
Uses
7-Tridecanone is an isomer of 2-Tridecanone which is a flavor component of many food products. 7-Tridecanone, however, is much less distributed. It is also used to study the toxicity of narcotic industrial chemicals.
Preparation
From Hexyl
magnesium chloride and Heptyl nitrile (Hexyl
cyanide).
Safety Profile
Moderately toxic by intravenousroute. A flammable liquid. When heated to decompositionit emits acrid smoke and irritating vapors.
Purification Methods
Crystallise the ketone from EtOH. [Beilstein 1 H 715.]
