Tricalcium Phosphate

Uses

Tricalcium phosphate is a supplement that combines calcium with phosphate molecules. It is used to treat or prevent calcium deficiency. It is also used as an anti-caking agent in powdered foods and as an additive in some processed foods in order to increase the calcium content. It is one of the many forms of calcium supplements available. Some people take calcium supplements if they cannot get enough calcium from their diet alone. Calcium supplements have also been shown to help maintain bone density and prevent osteoporosis.

Origin

Tricalcium phosphate can be obtained from your daily diet, including: dairy products such as milk, cheese, white cottage cheese, cream cheese and yoghurt; calcium-fortified orange juice; soya products such as soya milk and tofu; fish such as salmon and sardines; and green vegetables such as broccoli, kale, spinach and turnip greens. In addition, tricalcium phosphate is a food additive that is odourless and tasteless and can also be found in baby powder, toothpaste and antacids.

Side effects

Common side effects of Tricalcium phosphate include: nausea or vomiting; constipation; thirst, increased urination; flatulence or loss of appetite. Serious side effects include severe nausea, vomiting or constipation; high blood calcium; symptoms of kidney stones. A small number of patients may experience allergic reactions such as hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
