Odor

Fresh and light, green-fatty, winey and saPIike odor of poor tenacity. Sweet winey-nut-like taste. Green only in high concentration.

Uses

1-Heptanol is commonly used in cardiac electrophysiology experiments to block gap junctions and increase axial resistance between myocytes. Increasing axial resistance will decrease conduction velocity and increase the heart's susceptibility to reentrant excitation and sustained arrhythmias.

1-Heptanol has a pleasant smell and is used in cosmetics for its fragrance.

Hazard

1-Heptanol is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. The substance is mildly irritating to the skin. If this liquid is swallowed, aspiration into the lungs may result in chemical pneumonitis. Exposure at high levels could cause effects on the central nervous system.

Chemical Reactivity

Reactivity with Water. No reaction; Reactivity with Common Materials: No reactions; Stability During Transport: Stable; Neutralizing Agents for Acids and Caustics: Not pertinent; Polymerization: Not pertinent; Inhibitor of Polymerization: Not pertinent.
