The most common current use for naphthalene is as a raw material in the production of phthalic anhydride, which is often used in the production of dyes, plasticizers, insecticides and some pharmaceutical products.

In the past, naphthalene was used as a fumigant for repelling moths, for which it is popularly known as mothballs.

And it is typically safe for use around adults and older children, if used perfectly and in the right quantity.

The naphthalene balls are greatly useful for odour control in washrooms. They can also be used around sinks and wash basins to keep the foul smell away. The naphthalene balls will also prevent mildew from your living room and toilet.

Another classical use of naphthalene was as a fumigant for soil. Such uses are now discontinued. It is also used as a fumigant insecticide that works by turning directly from a solid into a toxic vapor.
