Lithium phosphate (Li3PO4):Lewis Structure,Uses and Health hazard
Lithium phosphate (Li3PO4) is a white-colored powder, its primary use lies in battery technology, especially in the production of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Beyond this, it is also employed in research activities in ceramics and glass manufacturing, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, optoelectronics, corrosion inhibition, laboratory reagents etc.
Lewis Structure
Chemical stability
Lithium phosphate is chemically stable under standard ambient conditions (room temperature).
Uses
Lithium phosphate (Li₃PO₄) can be used as a precursor in the synthesis of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It can be used as an electrolyte additive to enhance the performance and stability of lithium-ion batteries. Itcan be employed in the production of specialty glasses, where it improves the thermal and chemical properties of the glass.
Health hazard
Large doses of Lithium phosphate have caused dizziness and prostration, and can cause kidney damage if sodium intake is limited. Dehydration, weight loss, dermatological effects, and thyroid disturbances have been reported. Central nervous system effects that include slurred speech, blurred vision, sensory loss, ataxia, and convulsions may occur. Diarrhea, vomiting, and neuromuscular effects such as tremor, clonus, and hyperactive reflexes may occur as a result of repeated exposure to lithium ion.
Acute toxicity
Acute toxicity estimate Oral - Expert judgment - 500,1 mg/kg;
Inhalation: Irritating to respiratory system.
LD50 Dermal - Rabbit - male and female-> 3.000 mg/kg (OECD Test Guideline 402).
