Lewis structure for HIO3
Iodic acid (HIO3) has been of interest because of its potential application as an optically non-linear material. The crystal structure of α-phase of iodic acid was first reported in 1941, and crystalizes in the orthorhombic space group D4 2-P212121. In 2005, a new metastable, centrosymmetric polymorph of iodic acid, γ-HIO3, was obtained via reaction between H5IO6 and Cr(ClO4)3 in aqueous solution, which crystalizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca. This phase is stabilized by hydrogen-bonded (HIO3)2 dimers.

The iodine atom is not restricted to an octet. Double bonds may be generated from the oxygen lone pairs so that to minimize charge separation.

Preparation
Iodic acid was prepared by oxidizing iodine with concd. nitric acid. The solution was evaporated at 150° to a thick sirup which was allowed to crystallize. Goniometric measurements agreed with those given by Groth for the a-modification of iodic acid.
