Can Azithromycin be used during pregnancy?
Yes. Azithromycin is an azamide antibiotic with a wide range of indications. It is a pregnancy category B drug. Azithromycin has also been shown in a clinical study not to cause a higher incidence of major malformations in pregnancy than the baseline level of 1-3 per cent, and macrolide antibiotics are generally safe in pregnancy. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you use them when there are no alternatives and the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. This is because Azithromycin may cause side effects of liver damage in pregnant women.
