Application of Poly(acrylic acid)
Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) is a high molecular weight polymer with good water solubility made by polymerisation of acrylic monomers. It exists in a cross-linked form. PAA is an anionic polymer, which means that the PAA side chains are ionised and negatively charged at a neutral pH. As a result, PAA is able to absorb and retain water, expanding to several times its original volume.
PAA is used as a thickener, dispersant, suspending agent and emulsifier in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and paints. Neutralised PAA gels are suitable for the manufacture of biocompatible matrices for medical applications such as skin care or therapeutic gels. In addition, PAA is an important polymer for the preparation of polymer blends and nanocomposites, and polyacrylic acid-derived nanocomposites have been used to make advanced blends for batteries, sensors, antimicrobials and water filters.
