Tungsten trioxide (chemical formula: WO3) is an oxide of tungsten (VI) and an important intermediate in the production of elemental tungsten from tungsten ore. The smelting process involves two steps: First, tungsten ore is treated with alkali to produce WO3, and then tungsten trioxide is reduced with carbon or hydrogen to obtain tungsten metal:

WO3 + 3H2 → W + 3H2O 2WO3 + 3C → 2W + 3CO2
