General procedure for the synthesis of 4-hydroxy-4-(3-pyridinyl)piperidine from 1-benzyl-4-(pyridin-3-yl)piperidin-4-ol: 2. A catalytic amount of 10% Pd/C ammonium formate solution (22.7 g, dissolved in 50 ml of water) was added to a solution of methanol (200 ml) of the stage 2 product (32 g) and the mixture was heated at 68 °C overnight. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was filtered using diatomaceous earth and the solvent was removed under vacuum. The residue was washed with acetone (100 ml) to give 17 g of product in 81% yield.
