Methyl cedryl ether is a colorless, slightly oily liquid. B.P. approximately 258℃. Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and
oils. Methyl cedryl ether is a kind of fragrant raw material, which has the smell of ambergris and ointment. It is generally prepared from cedar wood oil.
Using fir oil as the raw material for the synthesis of methyl cedarwood ether, 3,6,8,8-tetramethyl-octahydro-1H-3a,7-methyleneglycyclohexan-6-ol obtained by isolation of fir oil was reacted with sodium benzyl to obtain sodium 3,6,8,8-tetramethyl-octahydro-1H-3a,7-methyleneglycyclohexan-6-ol, which was then methanatized with dimethyl sulphate, i.e., after the salt-forming and methanatization reactions Production of methyl cedryl ether (10-methoxy-2,2,6,10-tetramethyltricyclo-[5,3,1,03,7]-undecane).
