1,2-Dimethylisothiourea hydriodate

1,2-Dimethyl-2-isothiourea hydroiodide is a pharmaceutical intermediate, and several studies have reported that it can be obtained by methylation of N-methylthiourea.

1,2-Dimethyl-2-thiopseudourea hydriodide is a thiourea derivative.

MeI (17.0 g, 120 mmol) was added to N-methylthiourea (100 mmol) in an anhydrous EtOH (100 ) mL) in a suspension of N-methylthiourea, exothermic dissolution of the thiourea occurred, indicating that the reaction was underway. The completion of the reaction was monitored by TLC (silica gel) . After 12 h, the volatile components of the mixture were removed by vacuum evaporation and the residue was dried under vacuum at 40C for 12 h to give 1,2-dimethyl-2-isothiourea hydriodate.
