Pure product is white needle crystal, m.p. 130°C, vapor pressure 3.599 Pa. It can be dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethyl formamide, methanol, ethanol, etc., and is difficult to dissolve in water. It is stable to acid, alkali and heat.
o-Toluanilide is a systemic fungicide used in pesticide formulations.
ChEBI: Mebenil is a member of benzamides and a benzanilide fungicide.
A detailed manufacturing route for mebenil is not available in open sources. Its structure, however, a simple o toluanilide, allows its industrial synthesis to be inferred from standard benzanilide chemistry. Commercial production would have relied on acylation of aniline with 2 methylbenzoyl chloride, itself obtained by chlorinating o toluic acid. This reaction, typically performed under controlled basic or catalytic conditions, forms the amide bond that defines mebenil. The crude product would then be purified by crystallisation to yield technical grade fungicide.
