ChEBI: 5-formyl-2-furoic acid is a member of the class of furoic acids that is 2-furoic acid substituted at position 5 by a formyl group. It is a furoic acid, an arenecarbaldehyde and an aldehydic acid. It is a conjugate acid of a 5-formyl-2-furoate.
The synthetic route for 5-FORMYL-2-FURANCARBOXYLIC ACID was achieved through the selective aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in the presence of a specific catalyst.
This synthetic route uses water as a solvent and oxygen or air as the oxidant, without the need for any external base. The core catalyst is a mixed oxide, CuO·CeO₂, prepared by high-energy ball milling. Under optimized reaction conditions (initial 5-HMF concentration 0.2 M, catalyst 0.05 g, water 7 mL, oxygen pressure 0.9 MPa, temperature 383 K), near-complete conversion (99%) of 5-HMF was achieved within 3 hours, yielding the target product 5-FORMYL-2-FURANCARBOXYLIC ACID with a high selectivity of 90%.
