N-tert-Butyltrimethylsilylamine may be used in the preparation of selenium and tellurium chalcogenides and the facile synthesis of N-alkylaminomethylphosphonates.
N-tert-Butyltrimethylsilylamine is prepared by the reaction of the parent amines with n-Butyllithium in THF/hexane. The parent amines are prepared by the reaction of lithium t-butylamide and the corresponding chlorosilanes (eq 1).
N-tert-Butyltrimethylsilylamine (Me3SiNH-t-Bu) reacts with [Cp*Rh(H2O)3](OTf)2 in acetone to yield a hydroxyl-capped half-cubane [Cp*3Rh3(μ-OH)3(μ3-OH)](OTf)3(t-BuNH3).
N-tert-Butyltrimethylsilylamine reacts readily with protic solvents, especially water, and must be maintained in a dry environment. It is thermally stable. Use in a fume hood.
Best purified by distillation.
