Acifluorfen-methyl is an intermediate in the synthesis of Acifluorfen-methyl-2-amino (A189975), a derivative of Acifluorfen (A795248), a herbicide.
Acifluorfen-methyl is produced by first synthesising technical acifluorfen, which is formed through nitration, ether formation, and coupling steps that build the diphenyl-ether herbicide core. Once the parent acid is available, manufacturers convert it into the methyl ester to improve handling, stability and formulation flexibility. This esterification is carried out by reacting acifluorfen with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst under controlled temperature, yielding the methyl ester through standard alcoholysis of the carboxylic acid.
