WHITE CRYSTALS OR CRYSTALLINE POWDER
Aminoguanidine inhibits both constitutive and inducible nitric oxide synthetase. Aminoguanidine has also been used to study the effects of nitric oxide on ovulation and ovarian steroidogenesis and prostaglandin production.
Aminoguanidine hemisulfate is used in the treatment of patients with chronic granulomatous disease, which is a form of leukemia. This drug also has been shown to inhibit follicular growth and nitrogen atoms, as well as to inhibit the production of protein-bound polyamines. It was found to have no effect on the intracellular calcium concentration or on growth factor release by receptor cells. It has been shown that it can inhibit cyclase activity and therefore reduce proliferation of cells in experimental models. The ester hydrochloride salt of this compound is an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase, which prevents the conversion of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) into cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
