A metabolite of Malachite Green
Leucomalachite Green is a reagent for the quantitative colorimetric micro determination of hemoglobin and other heme compounds.
ChEBI: Leucomalachite green is a benzenoid aromatic compound.
Leucomalachite green (LMG) is a chief metabolite of malachite green, a triphenylmethane dye th at has been used generally as an antifungal drug in the fish industry. DNA adducts formed in livers of rats fed with leucomalachite green have been observed with little mutagenic or carcinogenic effect. LMG is one of the most commonly used reagents for presumptive blood test. It gives a characteristic green color in the presence of blood. LMG destroys DNA in the blood, therefore, the chances of DNA recovery and amplification is reduced or eliminated.
Crystallise it from 95% EtOH (10mL/g), then from *benzene/EtOH, and finally from pet ether. [Beilstein 13 H 275, 13 II 89, 13 II 135, 13 III 529, 13 481.]
