Betaxolol is a selective β1-adrenergic receptor antagonist (log KDs = -8.21, -7.38, and -5.97 for β1, β2, and β3, respectively). This beta-blocker has been used to reduce intraocular pressure in research models of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. It is also reported to act as a neuroprotective agent in animals, attenuating excitotoxicity or ischemia-induced damage to retinal ganglion cells.
