Chemical Properties
almost white to light beige crystalline powder
Uses
Mercuric Trifluoroacetate can be used to prepare shrinkage-?reducing polycarboxylic acid water reducer for concrete.
Preparation
Mercuric trifluoroacetate can be prepared from Mercury(II) Oxide in Trifluoroacetic Acid or generated in situ from Mercury(II) Acetate and CF3CO2H.
Hazard
acute poison; is easily absorbed through the skin and is corrosive; exposure to all mercury compounds is to be strictly avoided. Releases toxic Hg fumes when heated to decomposition. Protect from light. Use in a fume hood.
reaction suitability
core: mercury
reagent type: catalyst
Purification Methods
Recrystallise it from trifluoroacetic anhydride/trifluoroacetic acid [Lan & Kochi J Am Chem Soc 108 6720 1986]. [Beilstein 2 IV 458.] It is very TOXIC and hygroscopic.
