Description
Isoeugenyl benzyl ether has a faint, floral odor of rose-carnation.
May be synthesized by benzylation of isoeugenol; also by alkaline
isomerization of benzyleugenol. It is an excellent fixative for floral compositions, blends well with Ylang-Ylang. Benzyl
salicylate, Rose alcohols, Butyl phenylacetate,
etc.
Chemical Properties
White or off-white crystalline powder. Soluble in alcohol and oils, insoluble in water.
M.P: 57° C. Isoeugenyl benzyl ether has faintly rosy-balsamic-carnat ion type odor
of exceptional tenacity. It is overall sweet and
generally floral when blended with lower
boiling components.
Uses
1-Benzyloxy-2-methoxy-4-propenylbenzene blends excellently with the Ionones and
Benzyl salicylate in Violet bases, and is widely
used as a fixative.
This ether is also used in flavor compositions, mainly in Spice flavors, but because of
its peculiar "dry" sweetness, also useful in
Banana flavors.
Concentrations are usually about 15-16 ppm
in the finished product.
Definition
ChEBI: (E)-isoeugenyl benzyl ether is a member of methoxybenzenes.
Preparation
By benzylation of isoeugenol; also by alkaline isomerization of benzyleugenol
Safety Profile
Mildly toxic by ingestion. A skinirritant. When heated todecomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
