Uses
Thiazole-2-carboxylic acid is an important raw material and intermediate used in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and dyestuff.
Synthesis
General procedure for the synthesis of thiazole-2-carboxylic acid from ethyl 2-thiazolecarboxylate: 2N aqueous KOH solution (3.5 mL, 5 eq.) was added to a solution of ethyl 2-thiazolecarboxylate (213 mg, 1.355 mmol) in ethanol (3 mL) at 116 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours and then acidified with 2N HCl (3.5 mL). The acidified mixture was allowed to stand overnight and needle-like crystals were precipitated and collected by filtration to give thiazole-2-carboxylic acid (43.3 mg, 25% yield).
